Reasons for Smoking
There are many reasons why people feel the need to smoke. Here are the most common:
- Smoking makes me feel good;
- Smoking is cool/used to be cool;
- I feel anxious - smoking helps me relax;
- I feel stressed - smoking helps me to unwind;
- Smoking helps me keep slim
- I need “something”;
Let’s examine these reasons:
Does smoking really make you feel good?
Think about the physical and mental things it does to you. It makes you smell – your hair, clothes, house and car, your breath. You develop lines around your mouth. Your complexion suffers, you may even look “grey”. You chest and lungs suffer. You are under the “spell” of cigarettes – they control you rather you controlling them.
Is smoking really cool?
You may have started smoking when in your early teens – it was to fit in, everyone else was smoking so you wanted to belong. Can you honestly say you enjoyed your very first cigarette – chances are you were coughing, maybe even sick, but you still continued to smoke.
Now that you are reading this, you are more than likely in your mid-twenties, thirties, forties, fifties etc. You are an adult now, with your own mind, so that reason for smoking, to fit in, is no longer valid.
Does smoking really help your anxiety/stress?
Did you know that smoking actually stresses your body so in reality you are creating a vicious circle by being stressed - smoking - stressed - smoking? So your body never really relaxes or unwinds.
You need to learn how to handle your stress by using breathing techniques, exercise etc. Just find some way to release the stress from your body physically. Hypnosis is an excellent tool to help you relax.
Do you really need “something”?
You need to examine your life and find out what is missing and then develop goals to achieve this missing element. Again as above, learn to use self hypnosis (all hypnosis is self hypnosis), yoga, meditation – something to help you focus inwards.
