10 Tips to Quit Smoking for Good

by Gillian Rodenback

As soon as you tell people you’re thinking of quitting smoking, it seems everybody knows someone who stopped recently. and that you should try the stop smoking program that they used. The problem is what works for one person won’t necessarily work for you.

The fact is that with so much information passed around that is confusing to people it is often much easier to just continue smoking and hoping for a simple solution. Actually taking the necessary steps to really quit smoking is not easy. It means coming to terms with the fact that stopping smoking really is best for you, as well as your health.

You are no doubt well aware of the health benefits to be gained when you quit smoking for good. But that doesn’t make it any easier to give up, or more importantly to find a suitable stop smoking program of method that will work for you. Unfortunately the failure rate is unnecessarily high, so here are some tips to help get you started:

Tip #1 You must have a very good reason to quit smoking. The health benefits of quitting smoking are obvious, but you need your own personal desire for giving up, otherwise you’ll be relying on will power alone.

Tip #2 Reward yourself as you go along. If your first goal is to go a full day without a cigarette, make sure you have your just reward when you get there. These little (and frequent) rewards help keep you focussed. Just don’t include too many food based rewards.

Tip #3 Draw up a plan of action for your quitting strategy. Pick the stop smoking program that suits you best and be prepared to stick with it. Give your plan a six week run. If you haven’t quit after that, try another program or method.

Tip #4 Is there anything else making you smoke apart from the addiction to the drugs? If so, you need to work it out and find an alternative therapy. If you smoke to ease stress, find a better solution to reduce your stress levels like exercise or kick boxing!

Tip #5 Don’t give yourself any breaks. If you fail to achieve one of your goals, make sure you punish yourself accordingly. If you break the plan and sneak a cigarette, punish yourself by refraining from one of your favorite activities the next day. This drives a clear message to your subconscious that you mean business.

Tip #6 Seek out help from your friends and family. You need support as you are trying to quit, and this will help you to ensure that you are not alone in the entire process.

Tip #7 Consider looking for a “quit buddy”. If you have a friend or partner who is giving up smoking with you, it can make the journey a lot easier, as you will both be accountable to each other.

Tip #8 This may sound simple but make sure you get plenty of sleep. You know what you’re like when you’re tired - so don’t make the task of quitting smoking any harder by being tired.

Tip #9 Make your plan to be to quit smoking for good. This may sound obvious, but by creating the right mindset from the start, you will subconsciously put more effort into achieving your goals.

Tip #10 You will undoubtedly have cravings and urges, so make a list of things you can do to take you mind of smoking when these situations arise. Forewarned is forearmed.

The Benefits of Not Smoking

by Charlie Reese

The Good and the Bad: What Happens When You Stop Smoking

When you are deciding to quit smoking you will probably weigh up the pros and cons of the situation. The pros would be all the health benefits that quitting smoking will give you. The cons would be the struggle that is quitting.

A lot of the time people put off quitting smoking because they never think that they will be the one to suffer the consequences of smoking. So exactly what happens when you stop smoking? There are both good and bad things that will happen when you decide to quit smoking.

Withdrawal Symptoms

The physical withdrawal symptoms that you experience when you decide to stop smoking are the result of nicotine residue in your body. A lot of the urges that make you want to light up are psychological. You feel compelled to smoke even though you don?t really need to.

You associate smoking with pleasant things such as having a drink with your friends or relaxing after work. These associations will make you want to smoke more when you have given up smoking. What happens when you stop smoking is an increase in irritability and anxiety.

The worst of it will soon be over however. Once your body gets rid of the nicotine residue you will stop feeling the physical withdrawal symptoms as much. This can take as little as two days. It depends on how much you smoke. The rest of the battle is purely psychological.

The Benefits

What happens when you stop smoking is not all bad. There are benefits that you feel almost immediately. What happens when you stop smoking is an increase in oxygen levels in your body, in eight hours you will find that the oxygen levels in your body have returned to normal and all the carbon monoxide has left your blood stream.

You will be amazed at what happens when you stop smoking in a relatively short time. Your energy levels will increase after about three days as your bronchial tubes relax and you can breathe more easily. All the breathing problems you experience due to your smoking will clear up in about three to nine months.

In the long term your health will also be benefit. A smoker?s risk of heart attack is higher than a non-smoker, a year after quitting you will reduce your risk of heart attack by half. After five years of being smoke free you will now have the same risk of stoke as a non-smoker. The road to recovery may be long but it?s worth it.

Smoking Keeps you Calm?

by Sara Mendez

In my job, I’ve helped a lot of people quit smoking. And I’ve heard a lot of reasons why smoking is a good thing.

I’ve been told smoking sharpens your mind, relaxes you, calms you, keeps you from yelling at the kids (or spouse), tastes good with coffee, tastes better after a meal. In short, makes you feel “better”. (I always ask “better than what”?)

I know you don’t completely believe these reasons, or why know you should quit smoking. I also know a part of you DOES believe these things, and more.

You do have a strong reason to keep smoking or you would have quit by now. Just so you know, there are not any laws stating your reason to keep smoking needs to make any sense. It rarely does.

You’ve probably already proven your reasons untrue. Smoking might taste better with coffee because the coffee taste on your tongue covers the bad taste of smoking???

Most of the time you KNOW the reason doesn’t make sense. That doesn’t change the craving though, does it? Just one more one more reason in your list of reasons to quit. A list that doesn’t have much chance against the well-rooted cravings to smoke.

It’s basically about two things. The motivation that smoking will make you feel better and the feeling that you’re trying to feel better than. That is all.

If you’re too hot, you look for ways to cool off. If you’re leg hurts you look for pain relief. If you feel bad (tired, stressed, overwhelmed, angry, lonely, whatever…) you look to feel good. If you have held the belief that smoking makes you feel good, that’s where your mind takes you.

This is an only slightly simplified explanation of a craving. Most smokers have more than one type of craving like, the ‘first thing in the morning’ craving feels different than the ‘after lunch’ craving. But the same model applies.

So how to help this situation? I can spend a few articles explaining it (and I have, look for them) But, it comes down to changing the feelings, motivations and beliefs involved.

First, the bad feeling needs to be helped. If it’s about stress, get it managed, if it’s a difficult situation, do what you can to take care of it or get some help. If it’s a bad feeling you get that is beyond what the situation deserves, behavior modification might be what you need.

Second, you belief that smoking helps you feel good (it’s probably the innocent mistake that smoking equals being an adult, in control, strong, capable, etc…) In truth, a cigarette is a plant leaf and chemicals wrapped in paper. The good feeling you’re anticipating from smoking is created by your mind. YOU make yourself feel better when you smoke. So it only makes sense that you can make yourself feel good by doing something that is healthy. If, your mind believes it makes you feel good.

And there’s the trick for most people. Successfully quitting smoking is much easier after changing these emotional connections. People don’t often think of this. That is why the success rate of medication and nicotine replacement alone is so poor. The only current exception is Chantix and even Pfizer, the makers of Chantix, recommend behavior modification along with their medication.

Healthy Foods are Available

by Sara Mendez

The public has spoken, they want healthy choices and America has responded! Being healthy and offering healthy choices has become a new trend not only in local cities but all over America and they aren’t going anywhere. Almost every restaurant is offering healthy options and disclosing their top secret nutritional information. Public schools are replacing soda machines and recreating the cafeteria food. Positive attitudes toward exercise and multi-fold benefits are being implemented at gyms. Organic foods and local markets are giving big chains a run for their money in many towns across America as well. It’s time to change our country, for the better!

American’s like to eat out but eating out does not have to mean sacrificing your health or diet. Wendy’s and Subway were some of the first fast food restaurants to offer healthy substitutions for children and adults. At Wendy’s a salad can replace fries for no extra charge. For a kid’s meal, parents can order their children a fruit cup and milk instead of fries and a soda. Subway also has raisins and apples in place of chips. Another chain is seeing their competitors success and making a change! Fatburger recently changed from vegetable oil to soy bean oil to fry their foods therefore reducing the amount of trans fat being served. Fatburger will also start using the leanest beef possible in all of their burgers and they are now offering a Boca patty (soy based meatless patty) substitute for all their burgers according to prleap.com. Even sit down restaurants such as Applebee’s are jumping on the band wagon by offering Weight Watcher friendly menu items.

In past years many restaurants did not disclose their nutritional information, but after a large public out cry, fast food and sit down restaurants relented. Now the nutritional information can be found anywhere from their internet websites, pamphlets in the place, or on the actual container such as McDonald’s fries carton.

Americans not only saw a problem with the restaurant industry but in their schools as well. Consumers asked for the governments help in fighting obesity and during the 2006-2007 school year, every district in America had a goal to obtain. This goal was to implement a better nutrition and increase activity levels according to aappolicy.org, and nearly every school accomplished this. Soda machines, snack machine and pizza were removed from every district from preschool to high school. They have been replaced by water, fruit and a salad bar. Kids can no longer sell junk food for clubs during school hours and all the cafeterias are required to serve balanced meals.

Organic is the new black. In the last ten years, local farmers have more than doubled. Organic products appeals to the new health conscious America on many levels. Consumers want to know where their food is coming form and if it has been chemically treated. When buying food from local farmers, it gives the consumer control and they can find out where the food has come from and what it has been exposed to.

Getting out and exercising is also critical to a healthy lifestyle. People are making an effort to get out and exercise at least three days per week. According to WebMD.com, some of the most popular exercises are yoga, core work and martial art based exercises such as Tai Chi. All of these exercises have multiple benefits such as stress relief, flexibility training and toning all built in. A new trend in exercises is also emerging, in 2008 WebMd.com reports America will likely see an increased amount of training, education and certification for all exercise providers and trainers. This is due largely to the rising health kick.

Many consumers are also adopting a new type of “diet” called flexitarianism according to CNN.com. Dietitians are defining these dieters as those who eat mainly fruits and vegetables but also eat protein but only three days per week such as chicken, lean beef and fish. It is a diet which is low in saturated fat and high in fiber. Those who follow this diet have lower risk of stroke, diabetes, and heart attack.

Over the years obesity and obesity related health complications have spurred America into action. Of course there will be those out there who love eating their greasy pizzas and triple Whoppers. But for those who do not want to gain hundreds of pounds, there are now options. Healthy living is taking over and it is here to stay!

Childbirth - Relax Through the Birth

by Sara Mendez

For nine months all pregnant women can think about is the birthing process. This process is both terrifying and exciting. Most women don’t know what to expect, they know it is going to be painful, but they are not quite sure how much. Since pain is different for everyone, it is hard to assess how much pain any one women will have. However this pain can be managed, not through drugs but through help.

One of the first questions a woman is asked by her OBGYN is what sort of birth they want. One woman may want a natural childbirth, others may want an epidural or maybe an under water birth. The choices are endless and making this decision is one which should not be taken lightly.

Just thinking about the childbirth can be shocking. The thought of squeezing a baby the size of a watermelon through an opening the size of a lemon is a scary. You know there will be pain and it will take hours. You know it will take weeks to recover from either natural childbirth or a c-section. Some women become so nervous that they psych themselves out and the whole process becomes unpleasant and the baby is born into an unhappy environment.

In this modern age there are many treatments out there for mothers who want a pain free natural childbirth. An epidural can sometimes leave the mother out of it or sometimes the mother can be allergic to the medication and not know until the epidural has been administered. Natural childbirth can cause tension and anxiety which can create high blood pressure causing danger to both mom and baby.

Many women are experimenting with a new form of childbirth pain management called hypnoanesthesia. Hypnosis allows you many things such as relaxing through the pain and contractions which will keep your blood pressure low and anxiety under control. You can avoid using medications and be alert and ready to hear your baby’s cry for the first time. Hypnosis is thought to decrease labor by at least three hours making it seem just a little more manageable. The mother will experience shorter recovery and a mother can choose when to feel labor and when not to, simply by hypnosis and the ability to control your mind.

Another appealing thing about hypnosis is the technique can be transferred to a nurse, husband or other partner and they will be able to help the mother maintain the state of relaxation through different cues and suggestions which will help her throughout her labor.

There are ways out there to clam yourself through childbirth but they do not always have to involve drugs and you do not always just have to deal with the pain. Child birth is a happy, exciting and beautiful experience for all new mothers. As a new mother it is your choice how you want to delivery your baby, but before you make a decision for your baby, you need to decide what will put both of you at ease, research all your options before making this important decision.

Quit Smoking Before Elective Surgery

by Sara Mendez

Surgery is complicated enough without all the side effects. Typically there are pages of consent forms to sign listing everything that could go wrong. Surgery, whether elective or required is something many will face at some point in their lives. Patients should understand many complications can not be foreseen. However there is one complication that can be avoided and it is in the patient’s control and that is smoking.

Certain protocols must be followed to insure the patient’s safety during surgery. Patients are often told food or water twelve hours before and to take a shower to minimize the risk of infection. For smokers there are other requirements. Many are instructed to cease smoking for at least two weeks before and two weeks after. Some surgeons may even ask the patient for as long as four weeks before and after the surgery to avoid as many complications as possible.

According to Anesthesiologyinfo.com, smoking does two things to the cardiovascular system which causes many problems for the anesthesiologist and surgeon. By smoking the patient is increasing the carbon monoxide which attaches to the hemoglobin in the blood which will decrease oxygen in the blood. Nicotine will increase the amount of oxygen the body needs putting a stress on the heart and body. The heart will not function properly because of the increased carbon monoxide and blood will not get where it needs to.

Second, the lungs are more likely to collapse because smoke causes the small airways in the lungs to not function properly as well. Smoking makes more mucus which can leak into the lungs, making the lungs unable to clear it. Smokers are more prone to bronchospasms and lung infections which can be fatal. Smoking has been linked to dozens of side effects from heart attacks to poor wound healing in surgery patients, by as many as six times more.

Leading a healthier life and having a successful surgery is something all doctors wish for their patients. Doctors do not want their patient to have complications before, during or after surgery. This is why they ask for smokers to at least take a break before going under any anesthesia. Making smoking secession a top priority is something all patients should be doing, regardless if they are having surgery or not.

Over the years, quitting has become easier. This is mainly attributed to more easily available treatments. Some of the most common treatments are found over the counter, such as the nicotine patch and gum. Some patients choose to try homeopathic treatments such as herbal remedies, acupuncture and hypnosis. Prescription drugs such as Zyban and Wellbutrin have gained popularity as well. Often treatments are combined so the patient can be as successful as possible.

The most important thing to do is talk with your physician and discuss your options and find out which plan will suit you best. Since there are many choices and options available to help you quit, there can be no more excuses. Do not wait until you need major surgery before trying to quit, quit before you get there.

Bans on Smoking

by Sara Mendez

According to www.wikipedia.org over 50% of states are covered by a smoking ban of some form. Depending on your state, the ban includes no smoking in bars, casinos, restaurants and in some cases hotel rooms or even patios. With healthcare costs on the rise, America has had enough and is trying to tell other Americans to get healthy! The smoking bans are not going anywhere, if anything they are only going to get more and more strict.

In 2005 Washington state imposed $100.00 fines for lighting up within 25 feet of restaurants, bars, movie complexes and other public places according to an article in USAToday. Indiana will not allow smoking at bus stops or ATMs, and in many states healthcare workers are forbidden to smoke during the work day and must sign a contract agreeing to this rule before they are hired. If found in violation of the contract, employees are fired on the spot. Other states have taken their smoking bans to another level, in Iowa even smoking in your car anywhere on the grounds with get you a fine USAToday also reports. California, who has been a pioneer in the smoking ban, also became the first state to out law smoking on all of its beaches, These trends have no where to go but up mainly due to people raising awareness among the public.

Second hand smoke was once thought of as nothing more than annoying. However research as shown there is cause for major concern about second hand smoke. Those exposed to second hand smoke are at equal risk as smokers to developing lung cancer asthma and emphysema. The public feels an obligation to keep non-smokers healthy largely due to rising healthcare costs and health problems.

Since California has been one of the major players in the smoking ban, they decided to take it one step further. Just when the public thought the ban couldn’t get any tougher, California added the old one two and included a ban on driving while smoking with children in the car. This law passed in 2007 making it one of the most drastic in the nation according to cigarettehouse.net. It outraged smokers who feel smoking in their own car is their business, however California’s govern and its lawmakers felt differently. Children should not be made to be exposed to second hand smoke.

Some feel by imposing smoking bans on the public, law makers are taking away a smokers right to choose what they do to their own body. While this maybe true, children and non-smokers are not given a choice at all when they are being exposed to second hand smoke. Smokers are still able to smoke in their homes and private property. They are only asked to respect the public who does not want to be around smoke.

Fifty years ago smoking was a widely accepted form of socialization among adults. Smoking was allowed everywhere from restaurants, work sites and in schools. However after seeing the effects of smoking many have chose to quit. Banning smoking is replacing the smoking socialization factor of fifty years ago, the new trend is healthy and no one should expect this new trend to go away any time soon.

Quit Smoking for your Smile

by Sara Mendez

Trying to quit smoking can be a challenge for many people but a challenge many people are willing to take for many reasons. Some have already been diagnosed with medical problems such as heart problems or diabetes all because of smoking and try to quit to prevent more. Others simply want to be healthier and avoid potential health problems such as Lung Caner and COPD. There is always a reason to quit, and BBC News just added one more, dental problems.

Along with the obvious health risks with smoking such as lung cancer and heart disease, this new study shows an increase in oral cancers, diminished ability of taste buds and rejection of certain dental procedures. Smoking can also cause the gums to recede, leaving the roots of the tooth exposed.

Implants work in a similar way to dentures. They are used in people who have lost individual teeth, create a bridge and to create support and a better fit for older dentures. Implants work by functioning as the “root” of the tooth because they are made from titanium and are implanted in the jaw. They are coated with a substance called hydroxyapatite which acts as the same chemical makeup of our own bones which makes implants more effective than dentures.

It is important for the dentist to be sure the patient is right for implants before performing the procedure. The biggest problem with implant rejection is smoking and other diseases such as diabetes which both affect the amount of blood that reaches the implant. The BBC study reported that is a patient stopped smoking before and for eight weeks after receiving the implant, it would greatly increase the odds of it being effective.

Implant rejection is not the only problem tobacco users face when it comes to dental care. Other procedures which are effected by smoking can be something as simple as a filling, teeth removals, and gum disease. Antibiotics and topical treatments can also become useless because of smoking which can lead to more serious problems before, during and after dental procedures.

Bad breath and teeth discoloration are fairly minor problems resulting from smoking, however these minor problems can turn more serious quickly. According to a study done by the American Dental Association, 32% of smokers needed to have a filling replaced, 10.1% needed a tooth extraction and 22.5% needed a major dental cleaning because of periodontal disease (a result of impaired blood flow). Smoking can also be a factor in the loss of jaw bone, gum disease leading to tooth loss, and increased plaque and tartar build up. The American Dental Association, also reported that 97.5% of patients who quite using tobacco, showed an almost complete reduction of mouth lesions (leukoplakia potentially cancerous mouth lesions) in just six weeks of quitting.

Quitting is the ideal way to combat these conditions. Another study done by the American Dental Association, 97.5% of patients who quite using tobacco, showed an almost complete reduction of mouth lesions (leukoplakia) in just six weeks of quitting.

There are many ways available to quit smoking and your dentist can help you on your path. There are prescription treatments such as Zyban or Wellbutrin which can help curb cravings. There are also over the counter treatments such as the nicotine patch, gum and lozenges. Other treatments include hypnosis, acupuncture and herbal remedies. Patients should talk with their dentists or healthcare providers to find out the best way to quit for them. Since each person is different, each persons plan will be different. Some people use a combination of treatments to quit. Quitting smoking can be a difficult road, however it will get easier. The health benefits far outweigh the challenge.
